The beaches are unforgettable, because they have not been touched by the tourism yet. The Tyrhenian coast is mostly rocky with small romantic bays, the Ionian one offers sandy beaches. Although the region is nowadays low populated and in the inland you can find even deserted places, it has not been so in the past. The region was ihabited from the paleolit times, many archaelogical discoveries give evidence. In the 13th centrury BC "Lyki" from the Danube area started to move to this area, later on Greeks enriched the land not only with its culture - they builded towns in the river catchments. The most famous of these are: Metaponto, Heraclea and Posidonia. Emigration started later due to economic insuficience - the local people live mainly from agriculture and industry did not develop much here. What remained anyway are crafts, mainly ceramics, work and textil works and now the tourism industry is rising up.

The region has two provinces: Potenza and Matera, each with a coastal part with peculiar charm.
