nič sa im nevyrovná, na svete neexistuje druhé podobné mesto. Pre mnohých sú Benátky najkrajšie mesto na svete, iní ho zatracujú. Čaro ktorým pôsobí na návštevníkov je rovnaké, či uprostred zimy, keď sa nad lagúnami vznáša ľadový opar, alebo v horúcom lete, keď sa slnko opiera do starých kostolov, palácov a vodných kanálov. Metropola regiónu Veneto, ležia v najvnútornejšej zátoke Jadranského mora, vzdialené 4 km od pevniny v Laguna Veneta (benátska lagúna).

Spojenie s pevninou zabezpečuje železničná a cestná hrádza. Benátky sú postavené na 118 malých ostrovoch a popretínané niečo vyše 100 kanálmi (nazývanými aj rio), ktorých brehy spája do 400 väčšinou kamenných mostov. Asi do 15 000 na koloch postavených domov tvorí hustú spleť ulíc (často iba 1,5m širokých), na ktorých je vždy rušno.
Menšie námestia sa nazývajú Campo alebo Campiello, na rozdiel od veľkých Piazza, nábrežie Riva alebo Fondamenta. V mestskej doprave hrajú dôležitú úlohu pri preprave osôb plavidlá (vaporetti - motorové lode, motoscafi - motorové člny, gondole - chýrne benátske člny), ktorými sa preplavíte z konca lagúnovej hrádze (vedie z pevniny pri Mestre do Benátok), kde leží Piazzale Roma - je na ňom veľké parkovisko a poschodové garáže.
Kúsok na sever od Piazzale Roma vedie ponad Canale di Santa Chiara most, ktorý je prístaviskom mestskej dopravy. Hlavná dopravná tepna Canal Grande (Veľký kanál) sa začína pri hlavnej železničnej stanici a pretína celé mesto a je pre spoznanie mesta najlepší. Najväčším pokladom Benátok sú Benátky samotné.
Prechádzky nočným mestom, keď sú ulice takmer prázdne, sú obzvlášť čarovné (a bezpečné). V meste sú dva hlavné kostoly Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari a Santi Giovanni e Paolo, dve hlavné galérie Accademia a Collezione Peggy Guggenheim a „veľká dvojica“, ktorú tvorí Palazzo Ducale - najkrajšia gotická stavba na svete (kde v hladomorni prebýval i slávny dobrodruh Casanova) a Basilica di San Marco.
Je už tradíciou prísť do Benátok na obľúbený, chýrny karneval a spoznávať ich pamätihodnosti v netradičnej karnevalovej atmosfére, nevšednej prehliadke dokonalých masiek, karnevalového veselia, kultúrnych programov, koncertov a sprievodov.
Veľmi príjemný výlet je aj po známych ostrovoch lagúny - Burano, Murano a Torcello. Burano je ostrov, ktorý preslávila krajka (vyrábala sa tu už od 15.storočia) a má prekrásne rôznofarebné domy, ktoré vraj boli pomaľované, aby manželia spoznali svoje domovy zo svojich lodí ďaleko na mori. Murano je najbližším a najslávnejším ostrovom fúkačov skla, Torcello je vzdialený len 5 min. loďou a patrí medzi najkrajšie miesta v Benátkach, hoci dnes je už takmer opustený.
Lido je prímorské letovisko Benátok s niekoľkými verejnými plážami, dlhá úzka piesčina meria 12 km. Každý rok sa v týchto miestach koná dvojtýždňový Medzinárodný filmový festival, kde môžete na vlastné oči vzhliadnuť niektoré filmové hviezdy.
